Canon Details |
MDZS follows the tale of several complicatedly interrelated sects of cultivators (fantasy ancient China wizards) in Fantasy Ancient China. The story encompasses complex themes such as politics, love, intrigue, necromancy, not being able to handle your liquor, extremely bad coping decisions, being a dumb asshole, threatening to fuck your boyfriend while doing a handstand, having great women characters and then bussing them, and "they're trying so hard? why are they so bad at this? why are they. wh"
The story begins by informing you that the titular Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Wei Wuxian, has died! A lot of the current day plot leads from that circumstance, and a lot of the flashback plot builds to it happening. In this AU of events, each of two versions of Wei Wuxian and his deuteragonist (/♥LOVE INTEREST♥) Lan Wangji were offered wishes at two different timepoints in their canon: one after the dust had settled 14 years later, and one immediately after the main event. How they decided to try to fix what had gone wrong there was up to their mental state at the time.
What mission the wish-granting force wants from them return for this favor is still unclear, but it let them know they'd be traveling to new worlds to figure it out, and they'd better keep their goals in mind! After some ill-defined time in a tutorial world that bore a suspicious aesthetic similarity to aprincessdormant_online (RIP) to learn how questing works when you understand what the object is, they were kicked to another world... it was supposed to be Sidereal, right? No one's saying anything, so we can only hope.
Wei Wuxian's standing wish is to go back and undo his timeline, redoing events so that his loved ones do not variously die and get fucked up! He does not care if he winds up having to die or otherwise pass out of existence again to accomplish this. |

15 Second Summary |
Wei Wuxian starts out as a precocious prankster, raised by the Jiang sect's leaders and close to his adoptive siblings. An incredibly charming, talkative people-person, he's self-confident, clever and quick-thinking, has a heart of gold, and has been raised as a talented young gentleman by Ancient Chinese Fantasy standards. He's also endlessly curious, impulsive, forgetful, loves mischief and goofing off, and shamelessly pushes boundaries, whether those are people's comfort zones or a system's established rules.
War with the Wen sect fucks shit up, and leaves teenage Wei Wuxian's adoptive parents dead and their kids all wanted criminals. His brother's spiritual powers get destroyed; Wei Wuxian secretly gives him his own, then gets captured and thrown in a zombie-infested hellhole to die.
Surprise! He survives, learning to channel undead resentful power in place of his lost spiritual power and creating heretical demonic cultivation. He uses it to help win the war to general acclaim, but post-war, people begin fearing him and his reputation and relationships blacken. The Jiang sect disowns him when he takes the remaining Wens under his wing to repay a life debt. Resentful energy fucks up his emotions and control. Snowballing bad decisions and unlucky encounters lead to his being scapegoated, accidentally killing loved ones, and finally attacking every sect. In the end he's ripped apart by backlash from his own powers in a final fight with his brother, leaving behind failed good intentions and a fearsome legacy.
Going though loss, war trauma, betrayal and alienation, and a violent death, all while huffing the accumulated resentment of the undead, magnifies a lot of the ugly flipsides of his personality. This means that he has a lot of problems with emotional control and lashing out if approached the wrong way, and that can manifest as being bitter, sardonic, paranoid, arrogant, and occasionally sadistically cruel. At his core he's still a guy trying to do the good and right thing, but he ended his first life MEGA FUCKED UP and has not even begun to get over it. |
Abilities & Permissions |
Abilities |
Wei Wuxian is able to wield resentful energy and channel it through the flute he carries. He can do all sorts of wacky shit with it, including boosting his own physical abilities, raising and controlling the dead, casting various spells and wards, creating dark artifacts and tools, bringing suitable inanimate objects to life to fight for him by having spirits possess them, seeing the memories of the dead/asking them questions, attracting the dead to a specific spot, etc. etc. It's a long list but tl;dr he's necromancer as fuck.
He's also a trained fighter and swordsman, but the latter probably won't come into play as he hasn't used his sword in years. |

Sensing |
It is possible to sense that there is a straight-up hole in the middle of his soul! Donut soul. He's also filled with an absolute fuckton of resentful energy, which pings of malice and death and the ghostly grudges of thousands of other people. The sheer amount that he's carrying is enough to damage his mind and soul if used irresponsibly, though he's decanted enough of it into outside storage in Sidereal that he's not a potential walking bomb anymore.
Notably, he has the same (younger) soul as weiyingdown, but a completely different body. |
