[slits an eye open and looks up at him, adorably considering]

[it's hard to see much in the dim light! Lan Wangji is frozen, waiting, not quite meeting his gaze; he hadn't thought it'd be something at all objectionable or he wouldn't have tried it...]

[whuffs a little, mostly a breath, and puts the tip of his nose on Lan Wangji's knee, shutting his eye again]

[there's another long, long pause

then the brush moves through his fur again, gentle and meticulous; one stroke, two...]

[his tails start thumping on the mattress...]

Ridiculous.

[good. this feels easier that way, somehow, after Wei Wuxian spent the night on his chest.

starts fixing the roughness of his fur in earnest, gentle and meticulous

he woke up for the day and brushed his own hair and then it boTHERED HIM]

does he fall back asleep at all...?]

the next steps depend on whether or not it's soothed into a deep enough sleep to sleep through being removed from the lap again]

- Lan Wangji is gone :(

however:

- his fur is MAXIMUM fluffy
- he has been transferred carefully off of Lan Wangji's lap onto his pillows
- he has been established in a nest
- there is a basket of spicy buns by the door, covered with a towel so it's still a little warm
- there is also a bowl of water, and a similarly covered bowl of lukewarm tea
- there's a note at fox height by the door that says "Stay as you like."]

[the door's cracked open so he can get out but there's an extra ward there to make sure he stays safe :(]

[the basket and bowls have been emptied and nosed carefully into a corner, since he cannot get them to the kitchen, and the nest is still occupied]

he brought another basket. puts it on the dresser for now, and quietly sits on the edge of the bed to observe the nest occupant in its natural habitat]
